The reigning premiers saved their best performance of the season for last, jumping out of the gates early and never relenting throughout the match.

Tartan built up a comfortable 34-8 advantage after 21 ends, with Golf desperate to turn things around with 42 ends left.

Tartan extended that lead to 41 shots after 35 ends, using all their finals experience to lead 57-16.

Maryborough Golf continued to improve as the game progressed and played some fantastic ends near the end, but the deficit was insurmountable as Tartan claimed the premiership by 53 shots.

Gregory Shay set the tone with a dominant 39-7 victory over Elizabeth Bucknall, while Michael Fryar prevailed in a tight rink against Kort Gay 26-19.

Team manager Garry Coburn put the finishing touches on a magnificent team display by defeating Graeme Orr 26-12.

During the post-game celebrations, Coburn said it was a magnificent achievement for Tartan to win two midweek pennants on the trot.

“It’s a fantastic effort to go back-to-back in any form of competition,” he said.

“We had a little bit of confidence [going in], but grand finals are all different, you can’t get too confident and their club has had a great year to get three teams into grand finals.

“You only have to win by one shot but to win by what we did was very good, the last four or five ends you could take in what’s going on.”

Coburn said there were plenty of people to thank for enabling Tartan to repeat as champions.

“It was a great effort from the team as a whole, we played pretty well all year and we were well supported throughout,” he said.

“Highland Gold were very unlucky not to make finals, they played pretty well all year and kept us going.

“Phil Cain has done a magnificent job with the green, just before Christmas there was an inch of sand all over the green, to get it up to what it is now is a great credit to him.

“We have had some tough tussles with Dunolly and Avoca so we have had a pretty good season to get over the line.”
