Talbot home destroyed
Fire investigators are determining the cause of a house fire that occurred during the early hours of Monday morning in Talbot.
Local firefighters responded to a structure fire on Prince Alfred Street at 12.20 am on June 8.
Talbot Fire Brigade Captain Ross Andrews said when the first tanker arrived, the back of the house was engulfed.
“The fire had travelled up through the ceiling cavity in the roof and was working its way from the back of the house to the front,” he said.
Mr Andrews said they contained the fire “as best we could” through an external attack from two sides.
There was a delay disconnecting the power but, once it was safe, a breathing apparatus crew were sent in with a thermal imaging camera to find any remaining hotspots.
“They virtually cooled everything and that was pretty much it,” he said.
The two occupants evacuated, were checked by Ambulance Victoria, and were uninjured.
Mr Andrews said there was uncertainty surrounding the location of a third person, who is the occupant of a bungalow on the property, but they weren’t present during the fire.
“We just had to try and locate and account for that person,” he said.
Talbot, Maryborough and Carisbrook fire brigades responded to the incident.
Mr Andrews said the last truck left at 3.30 am.
He reminded the community to ensure their homes were safe coming into winter — whether it be cleaning fireplaces, checking electrical appliances, or taking other preventative steps.
“Coming into the colder months it’s not too late to check,” he said.
He also emphasised the importance of having a fireplan.
“That’s the most important,” he said.
