The many activities on offer are a way for the Maryborough Senior Citizens Club’s members to stay active and connected in their old age.

The organisation boasts a wide range of things to do for those young and old in the community.

Whether it be a game of indoor bowls or table tennis, a morning session of social Tai Chi, or a relaxed time with bridge, Hoy, or craft — there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Maryborough Senior Citizens Club president Lance Wadeson said participation is affordable costing $2 a session and $5 for an annual club membership.

Members need to be over 55 years old but any age can take part as an associate member.

“It’s good value particularly for those people who are just on the pension and don’t get much else,” Mr Wadeson said.

“A lot of people live close to the line but that sort of money is within pension range.”

Mr Wadeson said this was important because he wanted the activities to be a social opportunity for residents.

“Whether you win or lose, it’s more the social occasion you should be there for,” he said.

Research has found one in five older Australians are socially isolated.

The research centre behind the finding, Aged Care Research and Industry Innovation Australia, said older people are more likely to be socially isolated, which may harm their physical and mental health.

It’s a statistic particularly relevant to the Central Goldfields Shire community which tends to be older than the broader population.

The median age locally is 52 years old, whereas the state and Australia are 38 years old, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

They’re findings reflected in demand for the club’s activities.

During Veronika Miles time as club president, the club’s membership more than doubled.

“There’s so many people sitting at home with nobody,” she said.

Mr Wadeson said Veronika “thought outside the square” benefitting both the club and wider community.

Since her start in 2015, she expanded the club’s activities on offer, added in a luncheon and bus trips, alongside running community fundraisers.

“I just like to do things, that’s the thing, you’ve got to give back,” she said.

“Just because we’re getting older doesn’t mean we can’t have fun.”

Attendees unable to do the activity without support must bring a carer who can attend for free.
