Rising fuel prices could cost council
Pyrenees Shire Council will continue to monitor the ongoing global fuel crisis for its immediate and potential service impacts.
At its Monday meeting, council voted to work with peak bodies on potential mitigation measures and advocate to governments for crisis support.
Pyrenees Shire Council acting CEO Douglas Gowans said both council operations and the community are already experiencing immediate and emerging impacts from the fuel shortage triggered by the Middle East conflict.
“Council relies heavily on fuel for road maintenance and construction, as well as waste and recycling services,” he said.
Council has already identified potential cost increases for some services and projects between 10 and 25 percent.
Mr Gowans said some works have already been delayed or deferred, particularly those without immediate significant community impact.
“Council will operate within our financial constraints at all times,” he said.
“We will continue to monitor the situation and adjust priorities to ensure essential services are maintained.”
