Reservoir working bee on this weekend
The first steps of cleaning up Goldfields Reservoir are planned with locals invited to a community working bee this weekend.
Goldfields Reservoir Action Group (GRAG) are getting hands on, and are encouraging the community to do the same, at their working bee this Saturday, April 18, from 9 am to 1 pm.
While the community group would appreciate a helping hand the length of time that’s for is up to those who attend — either for all or part of the session.
Their focus will be on targeting Pampas Grass and Spiny Bullrush to reduce the weeds’ spread and, according to GRAG, improve the long-term health of the surrounding landscape.
GRAG spokesperson Tony Savage said their effort would help buy the group time.
“Some aggressive weed control is what we’re trying to target in that area,” he said.
The community group said the work will be done with the guidance of Rob Brouwers, a retired Parks Victoria ranger, and Darren Bird, formerly of the City of Greater Geelong (Bellarine), who specialised in reserve management and environmental weed control.
Attendees are encouraged to bring along their own equipment where possible including gloves, secateurs and long-handled loppers.
GRAG also advised community members wear appropriate clothing such as long sleeves, long pants and sturdy footwear including gum boots.
Participants will meet at the barbeque near the reservoir’s main carpark with tea and coffee provided on the day.
GRAG formed earlier this year, originally to refill Goldfields Reservoir, and more recently to include improvements to the surrounding public recreation reserve.
“People are just coming out of the woodwork saying ... we want to be part of this,” Mr Savage said.
