Pony trot sisters set to represent Victoria
Carisbrook sisters Evie and Josie Williams continue to take the pony trot world by storm, earning selection to represent Victoria at the Inter Dominion Mini Trots.
Held at the Albion Park Harness Racing Club in Brisbane this year, the Inter Dominion is one of Australia’s premier harness racing events, attracting pacers and trotters from across Australia and New Zealand.
Pony trot is a junior introductory pathway to harness racing, with children aged six to 17 competing in a safe and exciting event.
Before the senior harness racers battle for the $1 million Pacing Championship Final and $500,000 Trotters Championship Final in July, the sisters will participate in the event’s pony trot schedule, with Josie in the Shetlands division and Evie in the Ponies division.
“It was pretty exciting to hear it and just thinking that they’ve chosen us,” Evie said.
“It makes me feel pretty good that they think I’m good enough to go all the way to Queensland to do pony trots.”
It’s another outstanding achievement for the pair of drivers who have harness racing coursing through their veins.
Evie and Josie are fifth-generation trotting drivers, expanding a rich family history they celebrate by wearing the driving colours of their great, great-grandfathers.
Josie’s gold-striped blue racing attire used to be synonymous with her ancestor, Jack Hargreaves, who won the coveted Miracle Mile at Harold Park in Sydney back in 1969 driving Adaptor.
Their grandmother, Helen Mortlock, and uncle, Tim Mortlock, also had tremendous success in harness racing, winning the 2023 Central Victorian Pacing Champion-ship training Double The Hunter.
Josie said she feels incredibly honoured to continue a long-standing family hobby.
“It feels special that I’m allowed to do this because not a lot of other families get to do this kind of stuff,” she said.
“It’s a whole lot of fun. It doesn’t matter if you win or you lose, it’s just about having fun.”
While learning the reins, Evie and Josie have quickly added to their families expansive trophy cabinet.
Since earning her first trophy at the 2024 Ballarat Pony Trots Cup, Evie has also driven Tambourine Man to success at the Boort Cup on March 1.
Josie has also been incredibly successful in her young career, winning the 2025 Hunter Pony Trots Cup and February’s Ararat Cup driving Love Locket.
Both sisters said they’ve thoroughly enjoyed their pony trot experience so far, expressing their interest in staying in the driver’s seat for years to come.
“I want to be a harness driver when I’m older,” Evie said.
