MDHS cancer support program
Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS), in partnership with Cancer Council Victoria, is now accepting bookings for a free Managing Cancer and Exercise Program.

Maryborough District Health Service (MDHS), in partnership with Cancer Council Victoria, is now accepting bookings for a free Managing Cancer and Exercise Program, commencing in February.
The eight-week group program is designed to support people living with cancer by providing practical education, guiding exercise and peer support to help participants better manage their health and wellbeing throughout their cancer journey.
MDHS exercise physiologist Sandy Shepherd said the program is about empowering people with cancer through education, exercise and connection.
“The program equips participants with practical strategies to manage their condition while supporting both physical and social wellbeing,” she said.
Each weekly session runs for 90 minutes and offers a welcoming, supportive environment where participants can engage in tailored exercise, learn from qualified allied health professionals and connect with others who have shared experiences.
“Participants can take part in supervised exercise, learn about healthy eating, manage fatigue and build emotional resilience,” Ms Shepherd said.
“We know cancer affects people in different ways, and welcoming carers and loved ones helps strengthen the support available to participants.”
Participants will receive a personalised exercise plan under expert supervision.
“Regular exercise is a vital component of cancer care. Participants have reported improvements in quality of life, reduced treatment-related side effects and enhanced emotional wellbeing,” Ms Shepherd said.
The program will run every Monday from February 2 to March, 23 from 2 pm to 3.30 pm at the Health and Movement Centre in Maryborough.
An assessment is required before starting.
Those who wish to enroll or find our more, are advised to contact Sandy Shepherd on 5461 0333 (press 1) by Tuesday, January 27.
Individuals, carers and family members can self-refer, and referrals are also accepted from health professionals.
