The fixture was the first match the Maryborough Soccer Club had played in the prestigious state-wide competition and they were keen to make the most of it.

While Melbourne City FC, playing in the seventh tier of the Football Victoria pyramid, controlled the tempo of the match from the off, the blue-and-whites managed to create some chances for themselves early, particularly on the counterattack and set-pieces.

However, Maryborough didn’t capitalise, allowing Melbourne City FC to take advantage and open the scoring.

Melbourne City FC kept their foot on the gas after going 1-0 up, scoring another three goals to give themselves a 4-0 lead going into the half-time break.

Despite the half-time scoreline, Maryborough was motivated to keep pushing for an opening when play resumed at St Georges Reserve.

While their efforts were rewarded with a second half-goal, Melbourne City FC extended their lead, handing Maryborough a 7-1 loss.

Even in defeat, Maryborough made a strong account of themselves against higher competition, setting the foundation for further participation in the tournament.
