Maryborough earn Giant win over Lexton
The Maryborough Giants have opened their season in impressive fashion, recording a thrilling 17-point victory over the Lexton Tigers.
The game was played in wet, wintry conditions, which had an effect on scoring, with many shots on goal going astray.
The Giants led at every change but were made to work hard in the final term, as the Tigers surged late and threatened to overrun the visitors.
However, the Giants held firm under pressure to secure what many would consider an upset win.
Lexton, who had recruited strongly over the offseason, was widely expected to win on their home ground.
The foundation for the Giants’ victory was laid in the second quarter, where they capitalised on their opportunities with four straight goals.
Their defensive pressure also proved crucial, forcing Lexton into inaccuracy, with the Tigers managing just 2.9 for the term.
Conditions played a role throughout the match, with the wind affecting both sides. The Giants themselves struggled for accuracy in the third quarter, kicking 3.8 despite controlling large periods of play.
Cody Wright took several strong marks up forward during the term but was unable to convert in front of goal.
Lexton fought back in the final quarter, and some ill-discipline from the Giants, conceding four 50-metre penalties, had the potential of proving costly. However, they managed to hold on for the victory.
Former Royal Park player Rhys Egan, who played at Talbot last season, was a standout performer for the Giants, finishing with three goals and playing a key role in the win.
Scott Miller was influential in the midfield, while Zayne Earl also impressed, pushing forward to kick two important goals.
Despite the victory, the Giants may be without star player Lachlan Bates for a week or two after he injured his right ankle in the dying stages of the game.
The Giants named Egan, Jonathon Short, Miller, Riley Govan, Earl, and Wright among their best players.
Lexton named Luke Madden, Tom Cullinan, Aiden Broughton, Luke Guelen, Brandon Green, and Tristan Mason as their best.
