Leos to host inaugural event
Carisbrook Lions Club’s up-and-coming youth club are holding a disco next Friday.
Carisbrook Lions Club’s growing youth faction, the Leo Club, are holding a disco next Friday.
The Leo Lions Disco will be the first event from the brand new club which hopes to give young people more to do in Maryborough.
The event will be held at Maryborough RSL Hall on April 10, costing $10 entry, including free sausages and drinks.
Behind the event is father son duo Jefferson and Jackson Hoober who are both hoping to get momentum behind the club through their disco.
Leos is currently around 10 members locally but with more young people getting involved Jefferson said the club can be youth-led.
“The sky’s the limit. You can organise anything you come up with,” he said.
Same as how the Carisbrook Lions Club do more than barbecues, the Leo Club can be more than a disco, instead a way for young people to express themselves in the community.
“They might say let’s organise a colour run, let’s organise a camping trip, let’s organise a disco,” Jefferson said.
Maryborough kids want to leave town, in Jackson’s experience, with one reason driving them.
“Maryborough is quite boring,” he said.
Far from lofty goals his aspirations are simple — give them something to do.
“I want kids to get behind it and support it so we can have more events like it and keep it going,” Jackson said.
Local members recently attended a Leos summit in Melbourne where they contributed to a staggering 4000 sandwiches made for school children who would otherwise go without food.
Jefferson said, while the members were nervous at first, by the end of the day some shared it was the most fun they ever had.
“It’s sort of heartbreaking but it’s beautiful because you think you’re doing something right,” he said.
It’s a feeling he’s excited for other kids to share in without having to be involved in sports.
“I just see the benefit for the town, the benefit for themselves, I see them getting more confidence in themselves,” he said.
“It’s a win-win for the kids.”
