Lady Blazers look to extend unbeaten start to six
The Maryborough Lady Blazers’ pristine 2025 record will be put to the test this Saturday night with an away trip to the Macedon Ranges to face the Rockies.
Four rounds into the 2025 CBL North West Women’s competition, the Lady Blazers have risen like a phoenix and emerged as a clear frontrunner to compete for their first championship since their 2021/22 coronation.
After missing out on finals the past two seasons, posting a 3-7 record in 2024, Maryborough’s rapid ascent up the competition’s summit is worthy of a high-five, winning all five of their matches in 2025.
Their win streak includes a 78-point mauling of the Castlemaine Cannons last Saturday, with the Lady Blazers allowing just 12 points in the first three quarters.
Even with their torrid start to the season, Maryborough’s upcoming clash with the Rockies is significant considering they are currently not scheduled to play for another three weeks after this weekend.
Sharpshooter Aislinn McCarthy starred in Maryborough’s round one clash with the Macedon Ranges earlier this year as part of their season-opening double header, scoring 23 points and draining four three-pointers in a 23-point win for the Lady Blazers.
The Rockies looked to be a more substantial challenge this time around on their home court, nearly knocking off fellow undefeated team Melton Thoroughbreds last Saturday but falling just short by seven points.
The Lady Blazers juggernaut has also grown in strength, with several players taking significant strides throughout the year.
Heidi Plim and Azalea Wighton in particular have emerged as elite scoring options, with Plim netting a team-leading 23 points in their win over the Cannons while Wighton is currently averaging 14.3 points a game.
Maryborough was further bolstered by the return of familiar face Maddy Egan, who finished 15th in league scoring last season, averaging 11.5 points a game.
Egan wasted no time gelling with the new-look Lady Blazers against Castlemaine, marshalling the post on defence while stretching the defence out with her outside shooting on her way to scoring 14 points.
