Horsing around at Havilah
An iconic Australian scene of horsemanship brought back nostalgic memories for many at Havilah on Tuesday.
Residents across Havilah’s campuses came together Tuesday morning to see Anthony O’Brien alongside his horse Stormy and sheep dog Chip.
Although his aspirations to be a jockey didn’t stick, Mr O’Brien has spent his life working with horses.
Starting out as a saddlemaker at 17-years-old to living in the US continuing his craft, breaking in horses, and riding rodeos; Mr O’Brien had a storied life to share with residents.
Havilah CEO Tracey Saunders said the horsemanship show returned some country living many of the residents once shared.
“It was great to have Anthony O’Brien come to Havilah and bring a little bit of country back to the residents, who for many, have a history based on growing up on a farm in the region,” she said.
While those present may be elderly, their connection to the country is current. Before the show even started one man tried whistling up Chip just as he would have working on a farm.
Residents had the chance to pat the graceful giant Stormy while Chip worked his way through the seated audience.
“Anthony’s caring nature for animals was quite evident, and the fact that our residents could get up close and personal with his horse Stormy and border collie dog Chip put such big smiles on so many faces,” Ms Saunders said.
Resident Pat Howarth said it was amazing how residents adapted to Stormy and Chip. Like many of her peers, she spent her whole life in Maryborough surrounded by animals of all shapes and sizes.
“I think it’s wonderful for the older people to be close to [a horse] trained to be gentle,” she said.
Ms Saunders said Havilah plan to continue building connections between residents and the community.
“Havilah’s Leisure and Lifestyles team and community liaison officer will continue to work with residents to provide opportunities to grow, learn, and enjoy life in our community, with many exciting events, activities, and programs planned for the remainder of 2025 and into the future,” she said.
