Words in Winter’s 2026 program is set to offer something for everyone, with a stacked roster of events, panels and workshops.

Words in Winter’s program has been released, promising a festival of ideas and conversation which brings humour to life’s big questions.

The three-day festival, held May 29 to 31, invites locals to do everything from hone their craft to explore something new through expert panels.

Included in this year’s program are talks on why books matter, what it takes for women to thrive in sport, the changing face of conservation, through to panels on justice and aging.

Budding local writers, or those more experienced, of any age can also develop their skills alongside published experts.

The writing workshops have been expanded from last year to include two sessions covering both adults and students.

Words in Winter coordinator Janice Simpson said attendees can expect humour throughout the program.

“Humour, I’ve found, is an excellent way to engage people,” she said.

“If you’re just sitting there like a stunned mullet listening to someone talk it can be very off-putting.”

Instead, locals can expect to be engaged, and have the chance to chat with others between sessions, embodying the festival’s goal to spark conversation.

“We’ve had 15 minute gaps before and it’s just not long enough,” Ms Simpson said.

Bendigo’s Bookish will also be selling books between sessions on Saturday after their success last year.

Together Ms Simpson said the festival “represents excellent value” for the community.

“I encourage absolutely everyone to come. You don’t have to be educated or well read. You can come along and have a bit of fun with your friends, catch up, and enjoy listening to some things you may not have before,” she said.
