Last Wednesday, staff and residents at Havilah’s Harkness campus celebrated with dancing and traditional Diwali food.

Families also gathered at Princes Park last Friday night with nearly 100 guests taking part in Maryborough’s first ever Diwali event with games, dancing and lighting fire crackers.

The organisers of the event said the celebrations highlight the festival’s meaning of ‘triumph of positivity and hope over evil’.

Diwali is a major religious festival in Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism, usually falling in late October or November.

Marking the new year on the hindu calander, Diwali started globally on Monday, October 20, 2025.
