As two-day cricket gets underway, we look back at the top performers in the one-day season
With white ball cricket done for the 2024/25 season, attention has turned to the use of the red ball — but who stood out in the one-day game from the A grade stats?
Well, it couldn’t have been a better start for Laanecoorie Dunolly’s new Englishman Alex Cook.
Cook scored 297 runs at an average of 59.4 with the white ball, with a top score of 116 against Clunes in round five, while he also added 80 against Carisbrook the following week.
With the ball, Cook has been even more damaging, he took 15 wickets at an average of just 6.4, while conceding just 2.5 runs per over.
He kicked his season off with a bang, taking 6/7 against Colts Phelans in round three, while he also took 3/10 against Clunes in round five.
While Cook currently leads both categories, he has had challengers approaching him as the season has gone on.
Teammate Kamaljot Romana emerged as Laane’s hero in the one-day final when he swept aside anything Colts threw at him to score 114, taking his one-day season tally to 275 runs at an average of 68.8 — ranked number one in the competition.
Tom Hannett’s 252 runs at an average of 50.4 means Laane boasted the best three batsmen in the one-day competition by the number of runs scored.
While Beaufort’s Lachlan Oddie was fourth in the competition for runs with 197, two unbeaten innings — which finished on 83 and 60 against Clunes and Colts respectively — meant he boasted the second best average in the league with 65.7.
Rounding out the top five in the competition for runs is Clunes’ Anthony Ellis, who has been a rock at the top of the Magpies’ order, scoring 150 runs at an average of 30.
Cook’s nearest challenge for bowling honours at this juncture is Beaufort all-rounder Tom Alexander.
While Alexander is starting to motor with the bat, his work with the ball stood out in the shorter format, taking 12 wickets at an average of 12.1 and a run rate of 3.4.
Cook and Alexander are the only two players who have taken more than 10 wickets this season.
After a terrific weekend which yielded six wickets, Laane’s Zach Graham has moved up to third in the bowling charts with nine wickets at an average of 11.9 and a run-rate of 3.6. Graham’s performances with the bat are also noteworthy, with his 95 runs coming at an average of 47.5.
Laane teammate Joe Lovel and Colts’ Regan Goundry rounded out the top five in the one-day competition.
Lovel took five wickets against Carisbrook in round six to help him move to eight wickets at an average of 13.9, while of the medium and fast bowlers, he also has the best run-rate with 3.2.
Goundry has also impressed with both bat and ball, leading Colts Phelans in both categories, scoring 145 runs at 36.3, while taking eight wickets at 15.3.
