ALP branch launch new annual event

The Maryborough Branch of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) has launched a new annual event dedicated to commemorating the life and profound legacy of ALP stalwart and champion of regional development, the late Clive Philip Stoneham (1909–1992).

The event will take place at the Maryborough Highland Society tomorrow.

The event, taking place tomorrow, Saturday, October 25 at the Maryborough Highland Society, will feature the Honourable Catherine King MP, Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, as its keynote speaker. Minister King will be joined by Martha Haylett MP, Member for Ripon.

Clive Stoneham dedicated over 27 years to public service as an ALP Member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, representing the Mary-borough and broader regional community. A former Minister of State Development and of Decentralisation, his work in the 1940s and 50s was instrumental in bringing industrial growth and employment to regional cities like Maryborough.

“Clive Stoneham’s vision for a strong, decentralised regional Victoria is as relevant today as it was 70 years ago,” branch president Lorraine O’Dal said.

“He was a tireless advocate for industry and jobs in our towns, a Leader of the Opposition, and a passionate voice for social justice. His legacy is one of unwavering commitment to this community.”

Mr Stoneham, who began his career as a junior clerk at the Mary-borough Railway Station at age 15, took out his union ticket and ALP membership on his first day, demonstrating a lifelong commit-ment to the labour movement.

The attendance of Minister King and Ms Haylett underscores the Oration’s focus on the future of regional growth, the branch said. Minister King’s address will connect national infrastructure and regional policies directly to Stoneham’s foundational work on decentralisation.

The Clive Stoneham Oration will run from approximately 12.30 to 2.30 pm.
